This LP is a classic if you're a fan of the 60s-era Toronto music scene. Much like the scenes in New York and San Francisco, Toronto was a vibrant and exciting place to be during this period. In fact, if you really want ths skinny on the whole deal, check out Carole Pope's autobiography, Anti Diva (soon to be a feature film). She drops more names in that book that you can imagine, including some of the folks on the amazing compilation LP.
The Ugly Ducklings were a Stones/Who-influenced band who released half a dozen singles and one LP during their initial late-60s run (with another album out in 1980, and a few odd reissues of varying quality since then). This track, Gaslight, is a pounding rock song, with some real power and great vocals by Dave Bingham.
Ronnie Hawkins is a Canadian/American legend, and brings a surprisingly soft number here (complete with strings!) with Home From The Forest.
The Big Town Boys are hard to track down, but they bring the funk and soul with the kick-ass Jack Rabbit.
The Majestics (not Les Majestiks) were another brilliant soul group, here delivering a powerful instrumental version of Respect, of course made famous by Aretha Franklin.
